Vehicles that run on diesel have always been known to offer an eco-friendlier service. Another feature of diesel-powered vehicles that works to reduce emissions is AdBlue®. Read on to find out what not to do with Adblue®.
What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is the trade name for a form of diesel exhaust fluid. The product is made up using a mixture of urea and deionised water that’s stored in a detached tank from the vehicle’s fuel. When the vehicle’s engine is in use, small volumes of AdBlue® are oozed onto the exhaust gas produced, turning the NOx into nitrogen and water.
What to do and not to do
The Dos:
- Ensure that you are only using AdBlue® from licensees enrolled by VDA.
- Be on the lookout for the AdBlue® trademark on display at gas stations and on airtight AdBlue® containers.
- You must safeguard your product by reducing the risk of contamination from fuel, oil, water, dust, dirt, metals, and detergent by using preserved apparatus.
- ONLY use dedicated equipment for storage and dispensing
- Make sure that you are reading the storage instruction carefully and storing below 30ºC to maintain a shelf life of 1 year+.
- Store the AdBlue® above -11ºC in order to keep the product in liquid form.
The Don’ts:
- Never use non-VDA registered suppliers.
- If a product uses the term “Urea solution” or something similar, then you should avoid it, as this normally means that you aren’t using the proper solution.
- If the product you are using doesn’t specifically mention AdBlue® on the container, it’s an inferior product – and not one which you want to put in your vehicle.
- AdBlue® is not a diesel additive – so don’t use it as one.
- If the product has spilt into your fuel tank, do not start the vehicle; instead, seek help from a professional who can remove it.
- This product should always be used in your diesel vehicle – do not avoid using it.
- DON’T use fuel or lubricant equipment or any other jugs, buckets, funnels or non-dedicated equipment to dispense your product.
- DON’T replenish used AdBlue® containers such as IBCs and drums.
- DON’T neglect the storing instructions, and ensure that the product is never in direct sunlight.
