Due to the Red Diesel changes implemented by the Government, many businesses lost the entitlement to use red diesel (gas oil) as commercial heating fuel. As a result, many have been searching for a replacement fuel. One replacement fuel could be Industrial Heating Oil (IHO), so Oilfast UK has decided to write about IHO to help you get informed.

What is Industrial Heating Oil?

Industrial Heating Oil (IHO) is a cost-effective drop-in replacement for any red diesel (gas oil). It has been specifically blended for heating applications such as boilers, dryers and heaters. Costing less than gas oil and freeing government fuel levies saves businesses across all industries.

IHO is strictly prohibited for use in any vehicles, on or off-road, and any other mobile or stationary combustion engines and is explicitly intended for use in commercial boilers to generate heat. It is compatible with gas oil which means that no modifications are required to your heating system to make the switch. All you need to do is top up and go.

IHO has an almost identical calorific value to gas oil/red diesel, meaning you generate as much energy using IHO as you would using gas oil.

Who uses Industrial Heating Oil (IHO)?

As the name implies, IHO is used in the commercial industries. It’s used to generate heat within large industrial buildings rather than as a home heating oil.

The use of IHO is prolific in hospitals, schools, factories, hotels, and warehouses, to name but a few, and Oilfast UK supplies many of these industries on an ongoing basis.

How does IHO provide value for money?

As IHO is only permitted for use in heating applications, this grade’s production is more economical. This means it burns slower than gas oil, has long-term storage stability, is winter-grade and has zero bio content IHO has a higher calorific value meaning it produces more energy than standard diesel, providing more heat for your money.

Why use IHO over gas oil for commercial heating?

IHO has approximately half the sulphur level of gas oil, so acidic flue greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by up to 50%.

IHO has a higher calorific value than gas oil, giving you the same heat output as gas oil but for less money. Unlike gas oil, IHO is FAME/biodiesel-free, reducing the potential of a bacterial attack on the stored fuel.

IHO is light in colour, has a low odour, is sediment-free, and is, therefore, a much cleaner product than other commercially available fuels. IHO is additively treated, which improves fuel system cleanliness and provides corrosion protection, as well as emission reduction and chamber deposit control

Benefits of IHO

  • No burner modifications are required.
  • Significant savings
  • Less risk of plant failure
  • It contains additives that clean your fuel system.
  • It prevents deposits and protects against corrosion
  • IHO can be mixed with gas oil
  • No chance of IHO freezing in the tank
  • FAME/biodiesel free
  • Reduces harmful emissions
